A water-resistance rating comes from a static pressure test: the watch is held in a chamber at a pressure equivalent to that depth, in still water, at a stable temperature, for a fixed period. Real life is none of those things. Swinging your arm through a pool briefly generates pressure far above the static equivalent of the depth you are at. Diving into water does it more violently still. That is why a 30m watch fails in three feet of pool water — the number was never a promise about swimming.

ISO 22810 vs ISO 6425: the difference that matters

Two standards govern this, and only one of them means the watch was built to dive.

ISO 22810 covers ordinary water-resistant watches — daily wear and swimming. Manufacturers can test to it on a sampling basis, and it is the standard behind essentially every 30m, 50m, and 100m marking you will encounter.

ISO 6425 is the diver's standard, and it is a different order of rigor. Watches certified to it must be marked DIVER'S along with the depth — that word is the tell. Every single watch is tested, not a sample from the batch. The tests include overpressure beyond the rated depth, condensation checks, thermal shock, immersion in salt water, magnetic and shock resistance, a minimum strap-attachment force, legibility of the time in total darkness at 25 cm, a visible indication that the watch is running, and a unidirectional elapsed-time bezel.

The practical consequence: a watch marked "200m" without DIVER'S describes pressure resistance. A watch marked "DIVER'S 200M" describes a tool that was individually tested to survive being used as one. A 100m watch, however good, is not a dive watch.

What actually kills a water-resistant watch

Cases rarely fail because someone exceeded the depth rating. They fail for four much more ordinary reasons.

Heat. Hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs are worse than swimming. Heat expands the case and the gaskets at different rates, and as everything cools, the pressure differential draws moisture inward through seals that were never designed for thermal cycling. This is the most common way a perfectly good 50m watch ends up with condensation under the crystal.

Chemistry. Soap, shampoo, sunscreen, chlorine, and salt all degrade rubber gaskets. If a watch goes in the ocean or a pool, rinse it in fresh water afterward — that habit alone extends gasket life by years.

An open crown. A screw-down crown that isn't screwed down is just a hole in the side of the case. Same for screw-down pushers. And on any watch that isn't ISO 6425 certified, operating chronograph pushers underwater breaks the seal by design.

Age. Gaskets are rubber. They harden, shrink, and lose their compression whether or not the watch ever gets wet. A ten-year-old 100m watch that has never been serviced is not a 100m watch anymore. Have the seals replaced and the case pressure-tested every two to three years, or at every service.

One more, unrelated to the case: a leather strap has no water resistance whatsoever. It will rot, stretch, and smell long before the movement is in danger. If the watch is going to get wet regularly, put it on rubber, nylon, or a bracelet.

Why nobody says "waterproof" anymore

They used to. Regulators — the U.S. Federal Trade Commission among them — pushed the industry off the term decades ago on the grounds that nothing is permanently impervious to water. "Water resistant" is the honest description: a property that depends on seals, condition, and use, and one that degrades over time. If a modern listing says "waterproof," that tells you something about the seller.

What to actually buy

For a watch that lives on your wrist through ordinary life, 100m is the number to look for. It covers rain, showers, swimming, and the occasional forgotten-it-was-on moment, with margin for gaskets that are a few years past their prime. 50m is fine if you take it off before the pool. 30m is a dress watch rating, and should be treated as one — which is fine, provided you know that going in.
